artist

He said….

fairy-talesHe said, “Let me be your manuscript, your canvas, your camera” and I became the author of the greatest love story ever told. Writing page after page of a life that appeared out of the wreckage from living the hard way. Suddenly this tragic tale has become something that seems like pure fantasy, but the reality is so much more. It’s a tale of fate and destiny that was always meant to be. It shall become legend and all who read the story will feel its depth. The words vibrating from the pages, resonating throughout the universe and bringing this story of love to life.

He said, “Let me be your manuscript, your canvas, your camera” and I became an artist with a magic brush, painting our lives together, with a stroke his lips were pressed to mine and with another our bodies intertwined. Blending the colors of our spirits perfectly matching each other… one could not tell where I began and he ended. The paint splattered from every corner, every edge, revealing a vibrant energy that can only come from the heart. Anyone who laid eyes on this painting would know… they would feel it too. This was the image of LOVE. It was a portrait of me and you.

He said, “Let me be your manuscript, your canvas, your camera” and I became the photographer with a magic lens. Capturing moments of love and true bliss. Moments lost in the shadows of his being. Wrapped in his embrace, sharing the same breath in the same space. Adjusting the focus on his eyes I see the life he once only dreamed becoming real. Flashes of light and there I see the colors of his soul… his aura shining bright.  Focusing deeper, I see him and his light… his true being… and I knew this was right.

The Measure of Success

toast 2012I was talking with an artist friend of mine yesterday and the conversation went into the direction of one’s idea of their own success. He felt that he wouldn’t be success until he reached a particular income level. My idea of my own success was a bit different. I’ll share with you the thoughts of how I measure my own successes:

Instead of having one singular goal I have many and I never really plan them.. I just enjoy them as they come along.  Here are a few of them so you can understand what I mean:

  • The moment I sold my first piece.
  • My first custom order.
  • Repeat customers.
  • Creating something just how I imagined it.
  • Being happy with the end result of any project.
  • Getting into a real art gallery.
  • Being asked to participate in shows.
  • Positive feedback from customers.
  • Positive feedback from anyone!
  • Hearing how others relate to my work.
  • Shipping my work all over the world.
  • Winning Toast of Music City 🙂
  • Looking back at all the pieces I successfully finished.
  • Touching the lives of others.
  • Knowing someone liked my art enough to buy it and hang it in their home, becoming a part of their everyday life.
  • Knowing that pieces of me will live much longer than I… hopefully touching the lives of others for many years after I’m gone.

These are the type of things that I measure my success by.  If I measured only by how much money I make.. I may or may not ever see that goal. There is no way of knowing … so in the mean time … I enjoy all the other successes that come my way.

Why? Why Not?

I have many artistic/crafty friends and so often we get on conversations about when, how and where our art/craft sells or when, where and why it doesn’t.

If you are an artist or craft person… you know exactly what I’m talking about. Those who aren’t … let me tell you…..

Lets face it .. art isn’t something you go out and buy everyday … Art is a luxury item…  so I understand when times get slow and less are buying … especially in today’s economy.  But that’s not the only struggle…. The term “Starving Artist” cannot have more truth to it. It’s a hard way to make money for most … some get lucky and get in front of the right people at the right time and their art takes off … others struggle. They struggle to find an audience, struggle to find a venue, struggle to get seen/known/heard/noticed…. and because of all that they get to a point of justifying the time, money and effort they put into their creations. They struggle to make reason for continuing.

Finding places to show off your art or craft is easy .. it’s finding the right place where people show up to BUY .. not just browse … and finding the place that has the people buying that like what you create.

Pricing your own work has to be one of the hardest things for an artist to do beyond getting noticed by the right folks. You can put a price on the materials used but how about the time, effort, knowledge and work that has gone into a piece?

Artist and craftsmen don’t usually do it for the money and fame… we do it because it makes us feel good, it’s in our blood to create… it brings us happiness and a feeling of accomplishment each time we finish a project. With every piece we create .. we have placed a piece of ourselves into it and then we get to show it off and share with the world what we have created. It’s always a labor of love for the artist or craft person. But to continue creating for most … some pieces need to be sold in order to fund future creations.

All that being said .. back to my original question… Why? or Why Not?

Why create when it’s not selling? Why not?

Personally…. I create because I believe in what I’m doing… Because I have faith in that I create each piece with a purpose and that piece will somehow find it’s way to fulfill that purpose. It’s not in me to give up.. so I continue to do the work that I do … I create and create and create until my hands have withered away to dying flesh and bone… it is who I am and I’m no quitter .. I AM A CREATOR – BRINGING THOUGHTS AND IDEAS TO LIFE.

That’s why!

Stained Glass Guitar Project

My newest additction in stained glass… I’m working on a series of life sized guitars made of stained glass …

At the moment I have them all pieced together and it’s now time to start adding the real guitar parts to them .. I’ll be adding the bridge, stop, knobs and machine heads from real guitars and then also adding strings but not real guitar strings

I’m choosing not to use real guitar strings because of effect really .. the smaller strings would never be seen if I used real ones .. so choosing a wire that is a middle of the line guage between the thickest string and the smallest…. hopefully that will turn out ok.. we will soon see.

Have a look at some of the guitars so far….

Can’t wait to get the parts added on see how the finished products will turn out!
