Superstitions and Bird Meanings

IMG_3460I am asked all the time about the meanings for different bird superstitions.

Here are a few I’ve been asked:
What does it mean when you see 6 hawks flying overhead?
What does it mean when  bird flies in your house?
What does it mean when you see 3 magpies?
What does it mean when you see 2 doves?

This list goes on and on with all the different kinds of birds there are… so I’ll stop there.

There have been superstitions tied to birds for centuries. Who know where each one originated with but somewhere down the line someone said to another this means this and that means that and so on and so fourth.

The Magpie rhyme is a good one: One for sorrow, Two for joy ,Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret, Never to be told.

Here are a few others I found online:

  • If a bird poops on your head it is a sign of good luck.
  • Don’t become a sailor if you kill an albatross, as superstition states you will get lost at sea (we just think you shouldn’t on principle).
  • It is good luck if a blackbird makes a nest on your house.
  • If you see 5 crows, sickness will follow; see 6 crows and death will follow.
  • To avoid bad luck tip your hat if you see a magpie.
  • Whatever you do to a robin will happen to you, so be nice!
  • It is bad luck to see an owl during the day.
  • A kingfisher is a very lucky bird.
  • Three seagulls flying together, directly overhead, are a warning of death soon to come.
  • Sparrows carry the souls of the dead, it’s unlucky to kill one (again, we think killing any birds is wrong).
  • When a swan lays its head and neck back over its body during the daytime it means a storm is coming.
  • Having a wren around will prevent one from drowning.
  • A bird that flies into a house foretells an important message. However, if the bird dies, or is white, this foretells death.

These are all superstitons that many of us have grown up being told to believe as truth. All these things do is contaminate our minds with rubbish. A bird is a bird and a bird does what birds do. They fly most often in groups so if you see 5 or 6 crows .. well those crows are mostly likely family and they just like hanging out together. If a bird flies into your house, it probably didn’t mean to and is suddenly thinking “Holy Crap, get me out of here!!” .  If a black bird makes a nest on your house, it just likes where you live too. Are Kingfishers lucky? yep they get to hang out at the lake and fish all day … lol, that’s pretty lucky if you ask me. Is it bad luck to see an owl during the day? Ummmm well not to me.. when I see one in the day I feel extremely blessed, because I get to photograph it!!

It’s hard to get rid of the ideas we were always told to believe. It can be done. Just change the way you see those things.

When I see a bird or two or three or however many…. I get excited and happy. I am usually with my camera and the opportunity to photograph these beautiful feathered friends is something that makes me really happy. It’s nothing to do with omens, luck or anything else. It’s simply an encounter with a bird. That is just doing what birds do.

So what else have you been told to believe that might not really be true?

The Vulture

Today I have been visited by the Vulture several times today so I think I will share with you what I found when researching the Vulture. I think you might be pleasantly surprised .. I was! The vulture has always been depicted as a nasty, vulgar type bird .. a scavenger picking away at the lifeless body of the dead… but today’s research into the personality of the vulture has changed the way I now see him.

The Vulture is the symbol of death and rebirth, the mother symbol, and represents purification.   For those with this totem, you will be noticed more for what you do than how you appear.

Vulture or Condor teaches us how to soar above our limitations.

This Totem is a semi-permanent totem; once it enters your life it will be with you always, through your numerous lifetimes.

You may start to see auras and colors around people; Vulture can help teach you how to accomplish this through patience and vision.  Vultures teach you how to soar without using much energy, how to ride the thermal winds instead of flapping.  Go with the flow.  Use your own energy powerfully and efficiently.

Vulture is associated with the sense of smell and aromatherapy is a good tool to use to connect with this Totem.

The Vulture promises us that no matter how difficult things are at the moment, rescue and change are imminent.

Soar above the drudgeries of everyday life through spirit. And Vulture/Condor is there to protect you in this journey.

Just One of Those Magical Days

My day began with the dog wide awake and jumping around. He never does this at 5am when I wake up and get ready for work.. he usually lays sleeping with the hubby .. .both sound asleep without a care in the world. This morning, he was wide awake and bouncing up and down, so I took him outside, thinking maybe he needed to go out. So I step outside with Monty and there is this crow up in the trees cawing like it is nobody’s business. He cawed and cawed as loud as he could. Ok Mr. Crow .. I hear you!

Crow is a omen of Change. Crow lives in the void and has no sense of time, therefore, it sees past, present and future simultaneously. Crow merges both light and dark, both inner and outer. You must be willing to walk your talk, to speak your truth and to know your life’s mission.

On my in to work… I am driving down the interstate and get this sense of change coming. It was a quick glance of me driving down this interstate .. but it being an entirely different interstate than what I was on. I had this same feeling the day before and a few days before that as well. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm…. One begins to wonder… just what exactly is it that is coming?

So, I finally arrive at work and have this feeling when pulling into the parking lot that I need to grab my camera and take some photos. I am drawn to some tall grass in an area just off the parking lot that I usually never venture into. I go inside put all my things away, get my computer going and head outside to see what there is to see with camera in hand! I snapped a couple of photos of the tall grass and reviewing the photos from the camera preview screen.. I am just not drawn by what I see.. so I stand up and have a quick look around, wondering what is it that has drawn me to this spot and then just around the corner of a hedge I see this lone bloom hanging out.. just waiting for me to notice it.

It seems out of place, hanging there all alone and I didn’t think so much about it at the time.. I only thought about how beautiful it was and how I had to try and capture it’s gift to share with everyone. Writing this now I can relate… I, myself … often feel very alone and find myself just hanging out with no one else but myself. Sure there are others all around… but really I feel just like this blossom.. just hanging out with myself.. lol.. no crowd.. just me.. hanging out with my thoughts.

So, now I am inside writing my blog for the day and a Bluejay lands at my window.. looking in and screaming at me! I turn and say “What???” He gives me a look and then screams some more and flies away… then back he came and repeated his looking and screaming. Ok Mr. Bluejay.. I hear you too!

A  Blue Jay totem says, you must learn to use your personal power properly. Develop your gifts and you will have unlimited potential. A Blue Jay totem links you directly with the power of the Earth itself. It can link the heavens and the Earth and give you access to universal energies and power.

I know I have been out of the loop lately .. I haven’t been blogging and I haven’t felt connected to others lately. I have felt very disconnected. I was telling myself that I was just taking a break. Well, I guess my feathered friends are telling me break time is over and I need to get back to it! Okay! Okay! I hear you!

Many Blessings for a magical day!

The Towhee Medicine

This morning I was visited by an Eastern Towhee.. the first time I’ve seen this fellow at my feeder. I had to search the bird index to figure out what he was. Here’s some info I found on him and his medicine:

Towhee represents a time of utmost persistence and confidence. She teaches ways to uncover what is hidden. She shows the value of activity and progressing forward, even if it means taking steps backward. She shows how to maneuver in a way to keep going. Don’t give up. When Towhee appears there may something else you are missing and will show how to go over things with a new perspective. She uses resourcefulness and ingenuity to aid in revealing what is necessary. Is it time to voice your opinion? She shows the power in keeping feet on the ground and balancing energy and time that is spent on activities. Towhee’s medicine includes being quiet,

secretive and subdued when needed as well as being forthright, loud and defensive when it is appropriate. She shows how to balance such passive/aggressive properties. The time period for Towhee’s lesson span about 2 weeks. Be aware of situations where you can implement her wisdom for she will present you with the best course of action.

The House Sparrow

Here’s another little stinker I’ve been playing tag with this morning… he has been to my window feeder more time than I can count and so I’ve been trying to capture a photo of him for nearly 3 hours before finally succeeding! Whew … ok now this is the second bird this morning both with a message of singing our song… I reckon Spirit might be trying to me something this time around :-)

Here’s some info on this totem I found at linsdomain.com

The sparrow is one of the most common birds around, yet it has flourished when other species have failed.

It reflects self-worth. If a Sparrow totem has entered your life, ask yourself if you know your own self-worth. The sparrow will show you that even a common little bird can triumph.

The song sparrow reflects the chakra energy awakening from the heart and throat. It reminds us to sing out our own song of dignity and self-worth.

During the Middle Ages, the Sparrow was the symbol of peasants and the lower classes.

In Ancient Britain, the Sparrow was the symbol of friendly household spirits.

To the Greeks, it was the pet of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love.

The Brown Thrush

This morning I have been playing hide and seek with a Brown Thrush or Brown Thrasher …. ok so he kept hiding while I was seeking to snag a photo …lol

Here’s some info I found at starstuffs.com about the Brown Thrush Totem :

Brown Thrush appears to you it is time to sing a joyous song of life and all of the experiences that surround you. Coincidences and synchronicities will expand your spirituality in a profound way. There is beauty in randomness. She is about following your soul purpose and recognizing innate abilities. Communicating by listening and singing your song, being carefree and open with thoughts, ideas and creativity are part of Brown Thrush lessons. Shy and retreating or outgoing and friendly, what trait do you need to exercise? This animal is also a fierce protector of its environment. Are you watching your territory for those that come too close? Home aspects are also emphasized with order and

cleanliness. Do repairs need to be made? She will teach fearlessness and strength with a balance of gentleness and generosity. Even with strength in defenses your song matches few to bring joy and harmony to many people. Be alert to what may be hidden under the surface. She guides you into focus and clarity. You may have noticed a transformation last July/August, this allows the wisdom of Brown Thrush to be understood now. Brown Thrush’s optimum time is at sunrises and sunsets when meditation and quiet time should be utilized. She brings the feeling of Spring back into your life by rejuvenating your spirit with the beauty of the world. The time period of her lessons is a total of six weeks, 3 phases of two weeks each. Her medicine will show how to adapt with a renewed sense of joy and heightened awareness in each of the stages. Let your soul sing loud from the treetops so others may hear your message.

Many Blessings,
